The first goal of the Tuesday’s match in Medellin was scored by Russia’s Dmitry Lyskov which was responded by Iran through a stunning free-kick from Ahmad Esmaeilpour that rounded the scoresheet to 1-1.
Shortly after the break, the Russian squad once again took the lead and scored its second goal, but the Iranian team brought the game back in their favor when Ali Hassan Zadeh made it 2-2. Merely seconds later, however, Russia’s Vladislav Shayakhmetov scored the third goal and with Iran failing to respond back with a goal of its own, Ivan Chishkala brought the scoresheet to 4-2.
Although Iran managed to score its third goal 10 seconds left to the end of the game, the team lost to Russia and missed its chance to get to the finals of their Colombia 2016 campaign.
Now, Iran will have to play in Saturday’s third-place match against the loser of Wednesday’s semi-final, while Russia will face the winner of Wednesday’s semi-final between Argentina and Portugal.
